This meme originated from Drake’s 2015 hit single “Hotline Bling”, in which Drake makes a gesture where he holds his hand up to the side of his face while looking disgusted. The video itself became a viral sensation, because of the catchiness of the song and the sheer size of the rappers fan base, and also due to his awkward dance moves and funny facial expressions that seemed to fill most of the video.
It wasn’t long before the internet took over and began producing hilarious memes from different parts of the video and posting them to social media. Whether it was a snippet of Drake’s dance moves paired with a different song inspiring the #DrakeAlwaysOnBeat challenge, or screen grabs of the rappers facial expression being used much like an emoji to respond to different situations – the video was simply perfect to meme-fy!
As early as mid-to-late 2015, the image quickly caught fire in gaming communities. It soon was dubbed as the ‘Drakeposting’ image in general discussions. It quickly grew in popularity in forums across 4Chan by early 2016.
What started as “Don’t Like/Like” posts about cats soon spread to other genres, such as politics, general discussions, movies, sports, etc. Thus, was born the ‘Drakeposting’ meme template!
Drake was disgusted, meme makers rejoiced, and the world continued to laugh!
